The Funeral

Soapbox coffin
16 hands grip and carry
16 feet shuffle and scurry
8 voices murmur and moan
softly
shy
scared
in the bushes by the trees
where they huddle and hide
not to be seen
not to be heard
not to be found
not to be killed.

It’s God’s will
– says man –
that you be bullied
mocked
stoned
beaten
lashed
and crippled
in Jesus’ name
you be
jailed
murdered
or worse(!)
cured
from the ‘beast in your heart’
that yearns
only for love.

Never to have?
Never to hold?

No flowers are laid
No name is called
just a corpse
in a hole
alone
left in shame
and in peace.

At last!

David Kato, a Ugandan gay rights campaigner who sued a local newspaper which outed him as a homosexual, has been beaten to death on 27 January 2011…

On May 13 2011 the international pressure against the Ugandan government succeeded and Uganda has abandoned its Anti-Homosexuality Bill… Sadly, in March 2012 the Ugandan government pushed this law through. The only amendment to this heinous law since May 2011, is the removal of the death penalty against those found guilty of being gay… Still the Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, stubbornly down plays the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, otherwise known as the ‘Kill the Gays Bill,’ by asserting that it applies to exhibitionism only.  He states categorically that David Kato was not killed for being gay, and say he was “killed for other reasons” and overtly blames  Kato’s death on a confrontation with a boyfriend. In a public statement he recently said,  that homosexuality is a western import and claimed that gay people rarely face discrimination in Uganda. “I want to inform the world that those homosexuals were not killed as some people are claiming,” Museveni said
